Shoulder Season
November to February, outside the two Carnival weeks, Venice runs 20 to 25% below summer rates. The city is quieter, the hotels look after you more, and you can book a room at Antica Casa Coppo a fortnight out.
When to go
The real low-season windows
Three windows. Mid-November into the week before Christmas. The two weeks between Epiphany (6 January) and Carnival (usually early to mid February). Late February into early March, once Carnival ends and before the first Easter traffic arrives. Outside those dates the city is either booked or busy.
Partner rates typically land 20 to 25% below July pricing. A four-star San Marco room that is €280 in June is €200 in mid-November. A Cannaregio locanda at €160 in June is €115. Rooms that sell out by March are sitting empty for the taking.
Insider Tip
Pack rubber-soled boots and check the tide table on comune.venezia.it the morning of arrival. Acqua alta above 110cm happens a handful of times each winter, usually lasts three hours, and the hotels loan wellies at reception.
Pick the sestiere to match the trip
First Venice trip: San Marco. Short walks to St Mark’s Square, the Rialto, the Accademia vaporetto stop. Quieter at 8am in January than at any point the rest of the year. Antica Casa Coppo, Hotel Antico Fiore, Residenza Goldoni, Hotel Gallini all run no-prepayment partner rates in winter.
Quieter repeat trip: Dorsoduro or Cannaregio. Dorsoduro keeps most of its bacari and restaurants open in winter. Casa Rezzonico and Locanda Cà Zose sit near the Peggy Guggenheim. Cannaregio stays genuinely residential, and Hotel Apostoli Palace puts you five minutes from Rialto with half the foot traffic.
If the trip is about long, slow walks: Castello. Via Garibaldi and the eastern edge empty out properly in November. Hotel Cà Formenta is our usual pick there.
