Cannaregio runs the north edge of Venice from Santa Lucia up to Madonna dell’Orto. It is the Jewish Ghetto, the evening bacari scene on Fondamenta della Misericordia, and the sestiere with the most working Venetian kitchens. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes on foot to St Mark’s, depending where you start.

Best for: slower weeks, second and third visits, food-led trips, travellers who want to eat where Venetians eat. Skip if: it is your first time and you have only two nights, or you want to step out of the lobby into the piazza.

The sestiere

Cannaregio is the longest of the six sestieri. From Santa Lucia station it runs roughly north-east, through the Jewish Ghetto, past the Ponte delle Guglie, along the Fondamenta della Misericordia, and all the way to Madonna dell’Orto and the Sacca della Misericordia on the north lagoon. The density of the built environment drops as you walk away from the station. By the time you reach the Misericordia, you are in a residential Venice where dogs get walked, children play, and dinner tables turn over with local names on the booking sheet.

The Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516, is the oldest in Europe and still the functional centre of Venice’s Jewish community. Five synagogues face Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, the Museo Ebraico runs guided tours, and the cafes on the square serve kosher pastries. South-east of the Ghetto, the Strada Nova cuts a straight shopping line toward Rialto. Cross it and you reach the Ca’ d’Oro palace on the Grand Canal.

Vaporetto: Ferrovia, Guglie, Ca’ d’Oro, Madonna dell’Orto, and Fondamente Nove for the north lagoon boats to Burano and Murano. From Marco Polo, the Alilaguna Blue line stops at Madonna dell’Orto and Fondamente Nove in around 55 to 70 minutes. Walking from Ferrovia to the Misericordia takes twelve minutes.

What is walking distance

  • Jewish Ghetto. Established 1516, two synagogues open to visitors, kosher bakeries, the Museum of Venetian Judaism. Five-minute walk from most hotels on this page.
  • Museo Ebraico di Venezia. Small, excellent museum in the campo with guided synagogue tours.
  • Church of Madonna dell’Orto. Elegant 1400s church with a Gothic facade and several Tintoretto works. Tintoretto is buried here. Fifteen minutes.
  • Casa del Tintoretto. The painter’s pink-faced townhouse on Fondamenta dei Mori, not open to the public but worth standing in front of.
  • Ca’ d’Oro. The Gothic palace on the Grand Canal, now a museum. Ten minutes.
  • Fondamenta della Misericordia. The evening bacari strip. Walk it slowly at 19:00, glass in hand.
  • Ponte delle Guglie. The ornate footbridge crossing the Cannaregio Canal, gargoyles and all.

Insider Tip

Eat early at Anice Stellato on Fondamenta della Sensa, 18:30 sitting. Walk-ins after 19:30 on a Friday get turned away, and the Instagram lists have made the late tables impossible. Book two weeks out for a summer weekend, three days for a weekday in January.

Who this is wrong for

  • Two-night first-time visitors. You will spend the whole trip in transit to and from St Mark’s. Pick San Marco.
  • Light sleepers near the Misericordia. The evening bacari run late on Fridays and Saturdays. Book away from the fondamenta, toward the Madonna dell’Orto end.
  • Travellers who want a palazzo piano nobile as the hotel lobby. A few exist here, but most Cannaregio hotels are simpler. Look at palazzo hotels.

If it were our trip

For a second visit of five or six nights, Locanda del Ghetto. You get the quietest central campo in Venice as a front door, and the Misericordia is a seven-minute walk for dinner. Pair it with a Sunday morning at Madonna dell’Orto and an afternoon at the Ca’ d’Oro. If the budget stretches, move to Ca’ Sagredo for two nights on the Grand Canal at the end.

Common questions

How far is Cannaregio from St Mark’s?

Fifteen to twenty-five minutes on foot, depending on where in the sestiere you start. From the Ghetto it is 25 minutes. From Ca’ d’Oro it is 15. One vaporetto stop on the 1 from Ca’ d’Oro to Rialto, then a seven-minute walk.

Is the Fondamenta della Misericordia noisy at night?

Yes, on weekends. The bacari strip runs from 18:00 and people sit on the fondamenta until late. Book away from the water if you are a light sleeper.

Does Cannaregio flood during acqua alta?

Less than San Marco. The inner canals and the Fondamenta della Misericordia are the lower-lying parts. Check comune.venezia.it before booking in winter and read our acqua alta guide.

Where do I catch the boat to Burano from Cannaregio?

Fondamente Nove is the departure point for line 12 to Murano, Burano and Torcello. Around 45 minutes to Burano direct. The walk from most hotels on this page is ten to fifteen minutes.

Is the Jewish Ghetto open on Saturday?

Synagogue tours do not run on the Jewish Sabbath or on major holidays. The campo is open and the cafes largely closed. Go on a weekday morning for the full tour.

Can I book a Cannaregio hotel without prepayment?

Several of the smaller properties, including the locandas, still accept direct booking with no prepayment. Ring the hotel rather than using an OTA, and ask.
