San Polo is the smallest of Venice’s six sestieri, wrapped around the Rialto market and the bacari around Campo San Giacomo. Cross the Rialto Bridge and San Marco is five minutes away. The best-priced Venice for food-led second trips.
Best for: cicchetti crawls, food-led trips, second visits, travellers who want San Marco access without the San Marco price. Skip if: you want a palace view or a hotel right on the piazza, or if the morning market will wake you up.
The sestiere
San Polo sits on the west bank of the Grand Canal, reached from San Marco by the Rialto Bridge. It is the smallest sestiere but packs the densest set of reasons to spend time in Venice. The Rialto fish market still opens at dawn Tuesday to Saturday, with the pescheria colonnade directly on the canal. Around it, a network of small bacari pour ombre and cicchetti from 11 in the morning until after midnight.
The Frari, the great Gothic church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, anchors the western end. Around it are the Scuola Grande di San Rocco with the Tintoretto cycle, and a run of small campi (San Stin, San Polo, San Tomà) that the day-trip coaches rarely reach. A week here will show you a different working Venice to the one people see from the piazza.
Vaporetto: Rialto Mercato and San Silvestro sit on the Grand Canal for lines 1 and 2. San Tomà further west is the usual stop for hotels near the Frari. From the airport, Alilaguna’s Orange Line runs into Rialto Mercato in about 65 minutes.

The Aman occupies Palazzo Papadopoli, a 1500s palace with two refined restaurants, a spa, and the most photographed piano-nobile ceiling in Venice. Prices are what you expect from Aman. Plush rooms and suites on Riva del Vin, a minute from the Rialto Bridge, with a rooftop bar and a small terrace that catches the late sun. Some rooms look down onto the canal. What is walking distance
- Rialto Bridge. One to five minutes from any hotel on this page. Busy mid-morning, empty by 8am and after 10pm. Cross it for San Marco.
- Rialto Market and fish market. The pescheria colonnade opens Tuesday to Saturday from about 06:30 until 12:30. Two minutes from Pensione Guerrato.
- Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. The great Gothic church, with Titian’s Assumption behind the high altar and Titian himself buried in the left aisle. Ten minutes on foot.
- Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Tintoretto painted the whole scuola between 1564 and 1588. Twelve minutes, next to the Frari.
- Campo San Polo. The largest campo in Venice after St Mark’s. Summer open-air cinema, winter ice rink. Eight minutes.
- Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto. The oldest church in Venice by tradition, facing the market with a 15th-century clock on its facade. Three minutes.
Insider Tip
The best cicchetti hour in San Polo is 18:00 to 19:00 on a weekday. Start at All’Arco just off Calle Arco, two small plates and a glass of white, then walk five minutes to Cantina Do Mori (Calle dei Do Mori) for the second round. The Saturday-night queue is not worth it, and the lunchtime menu turista is not what you came for.
Who this is wrong for
- Early-morning light sleepers. The Rialto market opens at dawn. Hotels within fifty metres of the pescheria pick up the delivery boats from 05:30.
- Travellers who want the St Mark’s postcard from the hotel bed. San Polo is five minutes away but not actually the piazza. Pick San Marco.
- Families rolling large suitcases. The calli around the market are narrow and the bridges have steps. Santa Croce is easier to roll into.

How far is San Polo from St Mark’s Square?
Seven to twelve minutes on foot, depending on where in the sestiere your hotel is. Cross the Rialto Bridge and walk south through the Mercerie. One vaporetto stop from San Silvestro to Vallaresso if you would rather not walk.
Is the Rialto market noisy early in the morning?
Delivery boats from 05:30, stallholders setting up from 06:00. Hotels on the market side of Calle Scimia pick it up. Book a room on Calle Pezzana or on the interior courtyard for quiet.
When does Rialto market close?
Tuesday to Saturday, roughly 06:30 to 13:00 for the fish market, a bit later for the produce. Closed Sunday and Monday. Go on a Friday morning.
Does San Polo flood during acqua alta?
Parts near the Grand Canal, yes, but less often and less deep than San Marco. Check the tide forecasts on comune.venezia.it. Read our acqua alta primer before you pack.
Are there family-run options in San Polo?
Yes. Pensione Guerrato and Ca’ Angeli both run as owner-managed small hotels. Several still accept direct booking without prepayment. Ring rather than relying on OTA availability.
How do I arrive in San Polo from Marco Polo?
Alilaguna Orange Line direct from the airport to San Silvestro or Rialto Mercato, around 65 minutes. From Santa Lucia train station, the vaporetto 1 or a ten-minute walk across the Ponte degli Scalzi.
